Top 10 things I'm glad I knew (or wish I'd known) my first year as general counsel

Thanks to the kind invitation of former colleague Tim Shen, I'm giving an after-dinner talk tonight at a meeting of the Houston chapter of the Asian American Bar Association. The organizers suggested that I draw on a continuing legal education (CLE) paper that my friend Bob Robinson and I (and numerous contributors) put together several years ago.

The paper started life as "Top Ten Things I'm Glad I Knew (Or Wish I'd Known) My First Year as General Counsel." Bob and I did it as a CLE presentation at the 2001 annual meeting of the Association of Corporate Counsel. The presentation proved so popular we were asked back in 2002 and then in 2005.

The paper has grown to include more than 350 short items, grouped by topic. In case some of tonight's dinner attenders might be interested in reading the paper, I've attached the latest revision to this posting.

Also, here are links to the Pathclearer articles that I will be mentioning in my talk:

• Graeme Colquhoun, A clearer way to deal — Scottish & Newcastle group's innovative "Pathclearer" approach to commercial agreements, in The Journal, Jan. 2007, at 45.

• Steven Weatherley, Pathclearer: A more commercial approach to drafting commercial contracts, PLC Law Dept Qtrly, Oct.-Dec. 2005, at 39.
